What is a vehicle safety inspection?

A Safety inspections is a standard evaluation of the various parts of your vehicle. Technicians go through a series of checks to make sure that everything on your vehicle works well enough to meet the safety requirements defined by the State of Missouri.

What is a vehicle emissions test?

An emissions test, also know as a smog test, is a diagnostic test of the exhaust that your vehicle produces. It is a required test for those living in more populated areas of Missouri, such as St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Jefferson County, St. Charles County, and Franklin County. In rural areas, these tests are not required, but since exhaust fumes can be harmful to people and the environment, it’s never a bad idea to get your vehicle tested anyway.

Missouri Vehicle Inspection Requirements (general)

In Missouri, drivers are required to have their vehicles inspected every other year. To determine if your vehicle needs to have an inspection performed, simply look at the year the vehicle was made and follow this simple formula:

  • Vehicles made in even number years (ie 2002, 2008, 1998, 2010, etc) must be inspected in even calendar years (ie 2016, 2018, 2020 etc)
  • Vehicles made in odd number years (ie 1999, 2001, 2007, 2011, etc) need to be inspected in odd calendar years (ie 2015, 2017, 2019, etc)

Generally speaking, this simple formula is an easy way to keep track of when you’ll need to have your vehicle inspected. There are however, certain exemptions to this rule for certain vehicles and models, depending on when the vehicle was made. These exemptions can apply only to safety inspections, only emissions inspections, or both. Learn more about the specific requirements for Missouri Car Safety and Emissions Inspections.
